I. In accordance with the letter from the Health Promotion Administration (HPA), Ministry of Health and Welfare, dated October 21, 113, Ref. No. HPA-EDU-1130761354B.
II. Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemical substances, of which 93 are carcinogenic and harmful. Among these, 15 are classified as "Group 1 carcinogens" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Furthermore, research has confirmed that exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of developing and dying from lung cancer. Living with a smoker increases the chance of developing lung cancer by 20%-30% compared to the general population. Long-term exposure to secondhand smoke can cause or worsen respiratory diseases in children and is linked to cancers such as childhood leukemia, lymphoma, brain and central nervous system tumors, and hepatoblastoma. In Taiwan, over 27,000 people die from smoking-related harm annually, averaging one death every 20 minutes. Cancer is the leading cause, accounting for 50% (lung cancer 57%, oral and pharyngeal cancer 22%), followed by cardiovascular diseases at 28% and respiratory diseases at 22%.
III. According to the 2022 National Health Interview Survey on Smoking Behavior, the smoking rate among Taiwanese aged 50 and above is 9.6%, with an estimated 900,000 smokers. One in four adults (26.8%) is exposed to secondhand smoke at home. Research indicates that quitting smoking can effectively reduce the risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and fractures.
IV. To strengthen smoking cessation and prevention campaigns for the elderly population, the HPA has produced smoking cessation videos. All units are requested to enhance their promotion of these materials. The information is as follows:
