III. Performance Introduction:

(I) [Madame Butterfly]

1. "Madame Butterfly" is a classic opera created by the Italian composer Puccini, centering on the tragic love story between a young Japanese geisha, Cio-Cio-san, and an American officer, Pinkerton. Cio-Cio-san sacrifices everything for love, only to be betrayed, and ultimately chooses to defend her dignity with her life. The opera version premiered on February 17, 1904, at La Scala in Milan, but it was a complete failure. Puccini made significant revisions, and it was re-staged in Brescia in May, achieving great success. Thereafter, the composer revised it three more times, with the final fifth version becoming the version widely performed around the world today, and the version adopted by the Hungarian State Opera.

2. The Hungarian State Opera's "Madame Butterfly" was directed in 2000 by Miklós Gábor Kerényi, Hungary's most internationally renowned contemporary director. It has been performed continuously for over twenty years, widely acclaimed by audiences, and has also been invited to perform worldwide.

(II) [Swan Lake]

1. The Hungarian State Opera Ballet is Hungary's only classical ballet company, presenting a rich repertoire of classic and contemporary dance works annually, receiving international acclaim. It stages approximately 100 performances each season, showcasing not only captivating large-scale ballets with exquisite classical ballet technique but also new creations by contemporary dance masters and cross-genre works incorporating circus elements, all of which are highly popular with audiences.

2. Tchaikovsky's first ballet work, "Swan Lake," is one of the most beloved classic works for many ballet enthusiasts. This moving Russian romantic fairy tale tells the love story between a prince and a maiden cursed to become a swan. The same ballerina plays both the pure and innocent White Swan Odette and the seductive and cunning Black Swan Odile, making the plot even more captivating. The Hungarian State Opera Ballet's "Swan Lake" has been a signature repertoire of the Hungarian State Opera Ballet since 2015, renowned for its magnificent cast of dancers and its splendid and exquisite stage and costume design.
